  • We all know that the UNSC did not like the fact that Captain Del Rio( the jerk) left Chief stranded on Requim. But what happened to him? Did he get de-ranked? Did he get expelled? Did he die?

    • I think Lasky has some dialogue about FLEETCOM being pissed about Del Rio leaving the chief behind so they put Lasky in charge. I would assume that they forced Del Rio into retirement or maybe gave him an other-than-honorable discharge. Or they could have court martialed him because his actions led to the Didact leaving requiem and composing the citizens of New Phoenix, but if he had that severe of a punishment, I think we would have heard SOMETHING about it (in Spartan Ops maybe?).

true, but Osman, head of ONI would want to keep that a secret if it did happen. Mainly becouse it shoews incompetence in the UNSC.

    • Speaking from IRL experience on the matter, people who screw up that badly tend to "be strongly encouraged to retire" with the unstated threat that if they do not retire, they will face a court martial and criminal charges (kept out of the public eye if possible, and made to take ALL the blame if not possible, because if someone's going to take the blame for millions of unneeded civilian deaths post war, it's going to be the Captain who pissed off the war hero who was RIGHT)

    • Del Rio was discharged after he returned to Earth without Chief and was held responsible for the New Phoenix incident (not sure on that one) and was replaced by Lasky who, when the Didact arrived led the UNSC home fleet counter attack against the Mantle's Approach and the Covenant remnant he brought with him iirc. Nothing after that is mentioned of Del Rio I think

    • I like to think he retired to new phoenix after infinity's arrival at earth.

You Don't mess with John. As was seen, when you mess with him, your done. I mean, even I, the commander of the ENTIRE Forerunner military, could not even beat him. He was just like, oh okay, heres a GRENADE TO THE FACE. So When Rio was being a little b**** towards John, that immediately set the entire universe against him. I mean, if not for his attitude, it may not have stressed Cortana, and therefore she could have still been here.

    • The UNSC stripped him of him rank for leaving the Chief behind to die with Cortana

    • As a previous contributor stated, Del Rio was most likely "vigorously encouraged" to retire; I doubt that the UNSC would want to publicly shame the man chosen to be the first official commanding officer of a ship like the Infinity. It probably didn't help that the Didact's sphere could've been destroyed by Infinity, thus preventing the attack on New Phoenix from happening (though that's a little iffy; after all, a Forerunner Keyship--which wasn't meant for battle, mind you--was barely scratched by a massive Longsword carpet bombing on top of a salvo of MAC rounds).

Also, knowing ONI, they would have wanted to wipe away any loose ends. Del Rio, having commanded a highly classified vessel and with nothing to lose after being discharged, might have anonimously divulged classified information to get back at the UNSC and John-117. They might have killed him and made it look like an accident.

    • Yeah. FLEETCOM wouldnt like it when Del Rio returned without the Master Chief despite that being the very reason they embarked in the first place. Master Chief's priority to fight a possible threat to humanity while still vulnerable wasnt shared (obviously) with Del-Rio, especially after it crahes, with sheilds down, and still fired it's arsenal at the Didact sphere, forcing it to retreat, while also blasting Covenant ships out of the sky. I would say he wither did retire or got a desk-job. Or even took the command of a smaller ship.

Besides that, he made a ton of strategic errors resulting in a lot of unncessary military casualties:

      - Sending teams out for reacon immediatley after it crashed and being boarded.

      - Organising a "blow-through-Op" without Recon, leaving ground troops unprepared for terrain and enemy emplacements.

      - Ignoring the Didact despite Infinity being capable to defeat him even with limited capability

      - Leaving Reqeium without the Master Chief, giving the Didact time to consolidate his forces.

Add - New Phoenix incident: A preventable outcome. Reinforcing that by leaving the Didact untouched, he has allowed a threat of Humanity to become impervious to UNSC conventional wepaons and gain a WMD.

    • Maybe he was imprisoned if ONI killed him he deserved it he did almost get many people ( John and cortana included) killed

    • if you know anything about osman who i think is in charge of ONI then most likely Del Rio is dead or exiled but im pretty sure he is not apart of UNSC anymore

        Loading editor
    • What probably happened:  He was "encouraged" to retire.

What should have happened:  He was "encouraged" to retire to New Pheonix
