Rocket Race is a VIP Gametype in Halo 3 on Xbox Live. The gametype has eight players divided into four separate teams, Red, Blue, Green, and Orange. It involves using a Mongoose to reach a destination to gain points. It is also loosely based on a Gametype called Race that was featured in Halo:Combat Evolved.
The game has set point limit of 10 to reach, with each destination reached earning you or your VIP 1 point. At the start of the match, one VIP is randomly selected from the four teams, with the VIP acting as the gunner and the other teammate as the driver. Drivers of the teams then proceed to escort their VIPs to the different destinations on the map, while the VIPs focus on keeping the other teams away with their weaponry. One twist to the game however is that it is a Rocket Launcher only gametype with no damage enabled. This results in players and vehicles flying around the map when any rocket hits their vehicle. This type of game focuses on fun and often chaotic gameplay. However, sometimes the teammate that isn't the VIP will only run around trying to kill as many people as possible, making the game more enjoyable. Rocket Race is usually played on Sandtrap, Valhalla, sometimes Rat's Nest or slightly less commonly, Standoff.

- As per the release of the TU2 update, rocket race has been retired.[1] It will be incorporated into Multi-Team, with a low priority.
- It will still be used as a Double EXP Weekend from time to time.

- On Sandtrap, the Elephant is a usable alternative vehicle in Rocket Race. A few players have reported that they managed to win a few games using the Elephant.
- Rocket Race replaced Social Doubles on the social playlist of Halo 3 during a Bungie weekly update.
- Rocket Race as a playlist was retired in the September update but is a variant of the multi team playlist.
- You can still get MVP, but it's determined by the number of enemy VIPs you killed in-game.
- The only way to kill in Rocket Race is to assassinate, knock them into mines on Sandtrap, or knock them off the edge of the map in Standoff or Rat's Nest.
- If your teammate quits, the only way to gain points is to walk (or rocket jump) to your destination because as the VIP, you cannot drive a Mongoose or any other vehicle present.
- There are several advanced tactics players can use to gain the lead, such as propelling themselves with rockets commonly called "boosting" and finding shortcuts.
- There are a number of groups formed that currently play organized custom games.
