The Prototype BR-55 Battle Rifle (likely referred to with an X for experimental XBR-55, BRX-55, etc.) is "a prototype long barreled weapon with an optical scope."^[1] The weapon fires 9.5MMx40 FMJ SAP ammunition^[2] from a 60 round magazine ^[3] It was issued to Staff Sergeants Avery J. Johnson and Nolan Byrne as well as their militia squads' marksmen, Critchley and Jenkins by Lieutenant Commander Jilan al-Cygni for use during the Harvest event during the year 2525.

• This was the first weapon to be used against the Covenant and caused the first death of the aliens by the Humans.
• Even though the Prototype BR55's magazine capacity is stated to be 60 rounds, on the cover of Halo: Contact Harvest, the Battle Rifle Avery Johnson is holding has 36 rounds, although it is possible he hasn't reloaded.
• The prototype resembles the BR55HB SR much more than the BR55 variation.
• It has a range of at least 950 meters.
