M2859 Materiel Acquisition Pod or MAP, commonly referred to as "ordnance pods" are pods used for resupply by the UNSC.
The Ordinance Pod is used to deploy weapons and ammunition to the surface of a planet from a ship (such as UNSC Infinity) in orbit. These pods function on a basis similar to that of an ODST's Drop Pod with the exception that they are much smaller and are used to transport weapons and materials exclusively, not organics. This allows it to have smaller size than the SOEIV as it does not have to transport any Human sized objects and also does not need the life support requirements of the SOEIVs.
The pods are deployed from special bays on a ship. The outer casing of the pod desintegrates upon impact both to allow UNSC troops to gain access to the contents of the pod as well as prevent the technology of the pod from falling into enemy hands. The base of the pod detonates shortly after the contents of the pod are retrieved for the same reason. The Ordinance Pods onboard the UNSC Infinity are able to be deployed by the ship's AI, Roland.
In Halo 4 War Games, the player is able to call in a supply drop—called "ordnance"—once they have accumulated enough points. With this drop, the player is able to choose between three randomized options: typically a power weapon, a type of grenade, or a "boost". Once chosen, the ordnance will drop from the Infinityand land at the designated spot; if indoors, it will teleport in. The old spawning mechanic, where weapons and powerups were placed on the map, was replaced with "static ordnance", a supply drop spawning at the beginning of the match and at regular intervals. These static ordnances remain the same gameplay-wise to their older counterpart. Drop pods are capable of killing the user and other Spartans (whether friend or foe) if it lands directly on top of them.</span>
