Joe is an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper assigned to Earth. After his wife, Maggie, was killed during the Battle of Reach, he followed her wish in that he keep living, and later attempted to find a girlfriend. When he got three days shore leave, he took a train to Manhattan and flirted with his fellow traveler, Rani Sobeck. Rani, however, was committed to her military boyfriend Nick, despite his advice to take what she could get before the Covenant inevitably attacked.^[1]
