Final touches on ODST and Reach-Natal developments

Story by CommanderTony
June 29th, 2009

[edit] Intro

All sorts of changes are under way inside the dark and mysterious Kirkland bunker where Bungie, the renowned game studio, is putting final touches on the next version of Halo.

[edit] News

"The structure of the game is also different, for "Halo." Instead of trudging along a fairly set path, "ODST" begins in a dark and mostly empty city that players can freely explore, an "open world" model popularized by the "Grand Theft Auto" games. Players who prefer traditional "Halo" can head directly to sites in the city that trigger "flashbacks," putting them into classic "Halo"-style missions fighting aliens and blowing things up. Clues to the mystery come from playing through these missions."
—Brier Dudley, Seattle Times

In an interview with The Seattle Times, Bungie states that development of Halo 3: ODST is undergoing final touches and is nearing completion. A Nielsen survey released states that ODST is currently the most highly anticipated game of the year, like all of it's predecessors, with 53 percent of gamers expected to purchase the game later this summer. Also, the first name of a Marine ONI spook in the game, commonly referred to as "Dare", has been confirmed as "Veronica"; which has been rumored ever since the IGN.com interview that featured the full ODST opening cinematic.

What seems like Bungie tradition, only four years after moving to their independent facilities in Kirkland, Harold Ryan and others are already planning to shift offices to downtown Bellevue. Where they will occupy the former Galleria multiplex theater, where their environment will be in a vast open area with 30-foot-high ceilings. This is likely due to the gigantic Mark 7 Anti-Everyone Slingshot.

Bungie President Harold Ryan also stated that Reach, their newest project recently announced at E3 2009 in Los Angeles, may include gameplay elements enhanced by Project Natal. If you don't already know, Natal (also announced at E3 2009) is a motion-sensor accessory for the Xbox 360 designed to throw away the boundaries set by the standard controller.

Short comments are just so lame. Small sentence-length comments are great for Human memory units.

Project Natal may seem good on paper, but motion-based (without the assistance of a controller like the Wii) games never works in our time... Sony tried to implement such gameplay into their games and it didn't work our quite well (Referring to Eye Toy Program). I hope Microsoft has something better in its sleeve...

Oh gosh... straying off topic! Anyway, I hope Bungie realises the risk of getting involve in such risky project.

I agree, and even with such a controller, things don't always work out well. The only Wii game I've played where the controller was really and truly amazing was Okami. In my experience, it was decent for Red Steel and CoD3, and little more than a novelty -- if not a detriment -- for other games. So I just hope that if they do go with Natal, they still allow conventional controller use too.

All such points are exactly why we must hurry and create HoloDecks! lol

Natal looks good in therory, (Pardon my missppeling) but with games like Halo or other FPS it poses limitations on the body. While a Natal add on for machinima and forge might be good, could you imagine it in reality? Not all of us were or are in the military, so it would be hard to keep up. Plus, with SPARTAN-IIs being so fast, it would be like fighting through pudding. The only way I can see to fix that would to exagerate the motions of people, which would cause a time lag and cause pointing at someones chest smaking him with enough force to kill him. And please, feel free to argue my point

Well, I suppose that would be true. But the article states that Reach COULD have Natal for PART of the game. It is more than likely that most of the game will be controller-friendly.

I saw an ad for the Natal, and I just...well, I just don't see the attraction. I'd rather have a controller in my hand than have to flail about like I'm high on something. That was my biggest dislike for the Wii, but I guess to each his/her own.

Same here, i dont like very much that Natal idea, i think it wont fit on what we are used to play (well at least on some parts), i hope it to not ruin the game

There were things people weren't expecting to like (hate really) in a Halo game. Dual-Wielding, Equipment, Real-Time Strategy.
I'll hold my breath until we actually get some details, if even Reach will have Natal.

I'm not saying I'll hate it even if its good just for the sake of hating it, I just don't understand all the fuss.

Natal's gonna be a problem. I can see it now: I'm somersaulting to dodge a hail of gunfire, and slamming my head into the legs of a chair; I'm madly flailing my arms in an attempt to melee enemies; or windmilling my arms to grenade spam; or crouching low to the ground and trying to figure out how to look up at the screen without making my character look up... And all the while, people in my house are going, "Dude... What the hell is he doing?"

Not to be an ass...but do you people truly think that Bungie will make the entire aspect of Reach compatible with the game? Natal will only be there to enhance the game, not change it. If they introduce let's say, squad commands, it will let you choose between Natal with voice/movement and the controller. Because i'm pretty sure that they know that not everyone will purchase the new accessory for their Xbox 360.
Some of you should read the article a bit more and not assume anything until SOLID DETAILS are released.

It would be super hard to play a game where you have to constantly pretend to hold a gun.

Joem25, not all gun motions would be hard. CT, your probably right since you help get most of the info about this stuff. Also, wouldn't a headset work, too?

@SNES Lover: That's exactly what I was about to say. I don't care for Natal and as logn as it is for things like maybe like voice chat or something like that then I don't care.

Maybe they'll make 'guns' for FPS games, like duck hunt, remember? But then again, I'm dissappointed in microsoft because of NATAL though. I'm starting to think they didn't think the FPS genre for NATAL through.

I think they really should'nt be trying to make the Xbox casual. If we all really wanted avatars and motion controls, we would all go out and buy Wiis. It's really disapointing how Xbox exclusives like the Halo series and Gears of war games are going to be recieve camp family friendly controlls. But this is just my opinion.
