The Federal Republic of Germany (Also known as Germany, and Deutschland to its inhabitants), is a country in West-central Europe. It is bordered on the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; on the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; on the south by Austria and Switzerland; and on the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Its capital is Berlin.
Germany is a parliamentary federal republic of sixteen states (Bundesländer). The capital city and seat of government is Berlin. As a nation-state, the country was unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 by Otto von Bismark. After its defeat in World War II Germany was divided into two sections, East Germany and West Germany. East Germany was communist, and was controlled by the Soviet Union, and called the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or the DDR. West was a Republic, and controlled by the allies of World War II, and called Westdeutschland. The two sides became reunified in 1990.

Nearly three centuries in the future, during the Interplanetary War, the German colonies in the Jovian Moons, under the control of the the Freiden, became a major war zone during the Jovian Moons Campaign.
Beweglichrüstungsysteme, Essen was the place where CQB armor was researched and made. It's possible that Herzog was from Germany, along with many more UNSC Marines.
