Dust and Echoes is a song included in the Halo: Original Soundtrack.
It plays during the end of The Maw, in the ending cutscene.
This track gives the player the feeling of being alone; that they lost everything and that the victory came at a terrible cost, which it did. Rather than infect the galaxy with the Flood or activate Halo, which would destroy all intelligent life in the galaxy, the total destruction of the ring was concluded to be the only course of action.
- The intro was remade as part of the Sacred Icon Suite on the Halo 2: Original Soundtrack as well as the second half of "Wake Me When You Need Me" in Halo 3: Original Soundtrack.
- The first part is played in reverse on the level Keyes during the cutscene where John-117 retrieves the Flood-assimilated Captain's neural implants.
