A Cowling is a removable cover on a vehicle or aircraft.

[edit] Background

A Banshee with its cowlings.
A Banshee without its cowlings. These Banshee variations were used by the Covenant Heretics.

Cowlings will, most of the time, be the outer surface of a vehicle. The Covenant-made cowling is usually purple or blue in color, such as that of the Type-26 "Banshee" Ground Support Aircraft and Type-32 "Ghost" Rapid Assault Vehicle.

The Type-26 Banshee is a good example of a vehicle with cowlings. They are purple in color and act as an outer 'shell' for the vehicle. When the Heretics separated themselves from the Covenant, they removed the cowlings from their banshees to reveal the mechanisms beneath, creating the Heretic-Modified Type-26, giving their Banshees the colors of the Sangheili homeworld, Sanghelios [1].

The Ghost is another good example of the cowling. When receiving damage from small arms and explosives, cowlings will come off of the vehicle and reveal the internal mechanisms.

[edit] Trivia

  • Most vehicles in the Halo games are damageable, and, when damaging a vehicle, the cowlings will occasionally be blown off to reveal the mechanisms inside.
  • All vehicles in the Halo games have cowlings, more notably for Covenant vehicles due to them being easily removable. These vehicles include Phantoms, Shadows, Ghosts, and Wraiths.
