The Chieftain of the Jiralhanae is the central political and military leader within the Jiralhanae contingent of the Covenant,[1] responsible for representing their interests in the Covenant. The position ultimately became the entire Covenant's military leadership after the Great Schism. The position was created by the Prophet of Truth, towards the end of the Human-Covenant war.[2]
Function[]
A Chieftain of the Jiralhanae has requirements and functions beyond those of regular Chieftains. He represents the Jiralhanae as a populace and operates as a centric emissary on the Covenant's behalf, likely to the Ministry of Concert, and is also the Jiralhanae Commander in Chief of his entire race. The only known Chieftain of the Jiralhanae was trusted enough to be given a task vital to the Great Journey; Tartarus was given the task of recovering the Index from Installation 05 and activating the installation.
Notable Chieftains of the Jiralhanae[]
- Tartarus - Served as Chieftain in 2552, until the end of the Battle of Installation 05 in November 2552,[3] in which he was killed by the Arbiter while doing Truth's bidding.
- Maccabeus - Served as Chieftain in 2525, until the end of the Battle of Harvest in February 2525, and was slain in a fight to the death by his nephew, Tartarus.
Trivia[]
- After the Great Schism, this position replaced its Sangheili equivalent, Imperial Admiral. Both ranks served as the ultimate commanding rank in the Covenant military.
- After the death of Tartarus at the hands of Arbiter Thel 'Vadam, another Chieftain of the Jiralhanae was not immediately instituted, as Cethegus sought to claim the empty position during the Battle of Installation 00.[4]
