Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German mathematician and scientist who contributed to a number of fields, including magnetism. He pioneered the principle of magnetic induction, the basic prinicple behind the magnetic weaponry the UNSC uses. Many of the magnetic based weapons the UNSC uses, such as the M68 Gauss Cannon and the M99 Stanchion Gauss Rifle are named after him.
