About the Author

Hello! I am Subtank, the [only] female Administrator of Halopedia, Halo Fan Fiction Wiki, SpaceInvasion Wiki and Dead Space Wiki. If you need any help on expanding or improving articles or fighting vandalism, do inform me and I'll try to reply at my best timings. If there is any problems regarding my block actions or wanting a private discussion, please e-mail here. I sometimes monitor other users' contribution throughout Wikia, observing their style of editing. That said, I view them as great candidates in leading Halopedia in the near future. Additionally, if you spotted a vandal or spammer, you can report it at the Blacklist. I am very lenient in blocking users and vandals, though if it is too harsh, I blame mood swings.

Several things you might have noticed: I am not a hardcore gamer or a fanatic worshipper of Bungie. I am just one of those unique individuals who finds the Halo Universe to be interesting. I only accept friend request if it benefits me. That said, I view everyone as my friend, regardless of whether or not you're in my friend list. Do note that Wikia (including Halopedia) is not a social networking site. Oh, this account has multiple personalities, so go figure. :P

Improving Articles - Introducing "MOS"

43

MOS. What does it really stands for? Multifunctional Operating System? Metal Oxide Semiconductor?

"M stands for "Manual".
O stands for "Of".
S stands for "Style"
Her Royal Highness presents the abbreviation to the English community of Halotopia...

Halopedia's articles are of poor organisation, grammar and most importantly, quality and readability. Everyday, we've tried to fix these errors/problems left by visiting IPs and new users. Everyday, there are new trivia and images added in an article by these new users, often ruining the quality and organisation of these article. Our veteran users (both old and new) combat against these errors/problems and tried to return these articles to normal. However, that is not enough. (Oh, keep up the good work!) The real problem is the fact that every article we have in Halopedia has no common/standard format.

I'm proposing a proper style guide, otherwise known by Wikipedians as Manual of Style, to reorganise and improve these articles. Why, should you ask? The answer is simple: Organisation along with standard style in articles would show to visitors that Halopedia is not just some Halo encyclopaedia with fanatic fans (That means you, <insert name here> !), it is the definitive source for Halo information which is also known as the Halo Wikipedia.

So, what can we do to initiate this MOS? Well, I've created my personal Manual of Style for starters. It lists out all the proper format that we should apply to all articles according to their subject. However, my MOS is not official and is only for personal use. You may follow it if you want.

Going back to standardising articles, here are my proposals:

  • Level Articles (Such as Cortana (Level) or The Maw (Level))
    • Should not have the following sections:
      • Walkthrough (Walkthroughs should be moved as so: Article (Level)/Walkthrough. For example: The Maw (Level)/Walkthrough)
      • Weapon, Vehicles and Equipment Layout (also includes those that are (1)available to the player/ (2)appeared in the level. That said, these should go under the Walkthrough Section).
      • Enemies and/or Allies (This leads to redundancy. In all Halo games, there are only three enemy factions: Forerunner, Covenant and the Flood. What's the point of listing them out? As I said before redundant)
    • Should have the following sections:
      • Description - A brief description of the level. Brief!
      • Transcripts - Transcripts should not have multiple internal/external links. Video Links (such as Youtube) should be deleted/removed.
      • Trivia - Can be divided into Glitches, Easter Eggs and/or Miscellaneous. Redundancy should be avoided.
      • Production Notes/Behind the Scenes - If applicable.
  • Biography Articles (Such as John-117 or Avery Junior Johnson)
    • Should have the following sections:
      • Background - If applicable.
      • Biography - Includes the character's history such as Early Age or Death.
      • Combat - If applicable. Should not include strategies.
      • Age/Appearance/Identity - If applicable.
      • Trivia - Can be divided into Glitches, Easter Eggs and/or Miscellaneous. Redundancy should be avoided.
  • Species Articles (Such as Human or Sangheili)
    • Should have the following sections:
      • History - A must. Should be in chronological order.
      • Description - Includes physiology and anatomy
      • Culture - If applicable. (Some species' culture are speculated.)
      • Homeworld - If applicable.
      • Rank Structure - If applicable.
      • Combat - Should not have strategies or tips! This section is to describe their combat behaviour and vulnerability, not weapons they can or cannot wield!
      • Changes - This should list the graphical changes from games to games.
      • Production Notes/Behind the Scenes - If applicable. Voice talents, everything about the creation of the species.
      • Trivia - Easter Eggs, Glitches, Miscellaneous. Redundancy should be removed/avoided.
    • Should not have the following sections:
      • Appearances - The Era template has a purpose! To list out their appearances!
      • Gameplay - In contrast to Combat (see above bullet point).
  • Weapon Articles (Such as MA5B or Type-25 Directed Energy Rifle)
    • Should have the following sections:
      • Design Details - Includes Ammunition, Influences, Accuracy Issues and Advantages and Disadvantages. If applicable, "Variants" and "Changes from Games" should also be added.
      • Tactics - Includes both campaign and multiplayer strategies and tips. Advanced tactics should also be added if applicable.
      • Appearances in Novels - If applicable.
      • Trivia - Can be divided into Glitches, Easter Eggs and/or Miscellaneous. Redundancy should be avoided.

Those are the current proposals I've made for the time being. I've reviewed these articles countless times and went over it with several Wikipedians on how to improve them. Help Halopedia in her quest to improve her contents!

I agree, back when Halo 3 was still in development, those WikiProject Halo idiots didn't really like canon information too much, such as BR55 over Battle Rifle, UNSC In Amber Clad (FFG-142) over Human ship In Amber Clad, and so on.

But back on topic, I think Subtank is absolutely right. We've gone to long without an established MOS and I think the time is now when we start getting one, with 2009 looking to be the most Halo-filled year to date with two games, two comics, a new trilogy starting, etc.

And I have been also thinking that I.P. adresses should be prevent from editing the article, seriously. They are the ones that cause majority of the damage in the articles. And if person who creates an account here and vandalises an article, I think we should give a very strict enforcement rule that whichever account vandalisms more than one article, should be banned FOREVER, and all other accounts the I.P. adress creates should be invalid. Thus we can get New users to read these rules so they will think twice about doing anything. Also in future we mostly need to concertrate to improve on our articles, rather than repairing them from vandalism. I truly support this idea. Halopedia 2009 FTW!!!

Battlestar Galactica wiki prevents anonymous IP's from editing the entire site, I believe, so perhaps we might ask some of their administrators how that works out for them. They don't seem to be as active as Halopedia, though, and there are some format issues I have with it (such as making every paragraph a bullet point). For us, it might lead to a drop off in interest. The vast majority of visitors are probably anonymous IP's, with a miniscule amount creating accounts or vandalising. Your understanding of the ban policy is also slightly off. IP addresses can change - do the people who acquire an IP address already banned deserve that ban? We ban them for set periods so that the vandals lose interest. I doubt someone stupid enough to write "omg mc suks" has the patience or interest to wait three months to vandalise again. New profiles created by banned IP's are automatically banned.

In regards to my response, I'm admittedly influenced by the Manual of Style at the SC Wiki at which I'm an admin, but in regards to the points you raised as per feedback:

-Level Walkthroughs: Yeah, they shoul be seperated from the article in that the article proper is factual, while a walkthrough is subjective.

-Weapons/Vehicles: Hmm...I think they could be listed in a sub-section perhaps in the main article, though how/if to use them would go in the walkthrough article.

-Enemies/Allies: Yeah, pretty redundant.

-Transcripts: Hmm...I think it's worth keeping the YouTube links personally, but rather grouped at the bottom of the article rather than spread out, which is just plain ugly.

-Trivia: Seems good.

-Biographies:

-Background: I don't think it's worth having this as a seperate section per se, but rather as a brief blurb at the top, at most, a VERY brief summary of the character's life. This seems to be the usual MOS for most characters on wikis.

-Biography: Yeah, seems good.

-Combat: I don't know how this would work out without strategies really. Besides, few characters are actually fought in the series and whatever tactics are required to beat them can be fit in walkthrough articles.

-Age, etc.: Don't see this being viable. Such things are covered in CharBox templates. A "personality" section might be worth it but I'm universally uneasy about such sections, as they're ultimatly subjective. Those behind the universe's storyline might give official statements, but these are generally few and far between.

-Species:

-History: Good place to start.

-Description: I think "physiology" makes a better blanket term here. "Description" is too general and leaves things open for "humans are weak" or "sangheili are cool."

-Culture: Yeah, this can be applied for most, if not all sentient species.

-Homeworld: I don't think this warrants a sub-section of its own. The homeworld is specified in the species template and I don't think it's worth mentioning/speculating how the nature of a world contributed to the species' traits and if we know it did, can be inserted in to the relevant section (usually physiology).

-Rank Structure: I guess, but don't go overboard. We have articles for the likes of the UNSCMC and the Covenant Navy for instance, ranks fit in far better there than in a species where military service isn't a universal career path.

-Combat: I agree that the likes of weapon weilding is moronic, that in reality, such limits don't exist. However, I'm still uneasy, as the basis of combat traits is subjective. Perhaps it should rely on sourcing from strategy guides, which are about as official as things can get?

-Changes: Could probably be merged with production notes IMO.

-Trivia: Fine

-Weapons: Oh boy...

-Ammunition: Since individual articles usually exist for ammo types, they can be linked via the template. And if not, the info can generally be mentioned (an Overview section perhaps?)

-Influences: Should go in trivia. I don't recall there ever being a case where a weapon of the 26th century was ever explicitly linked with one dating back centuries in an in-universe sense.

-Accuracy/Disadvantages: I think the likes of these could go in a single section ("Gameplay"?). We know the MA5B has limited accuracy for instance, but is that stated in-universe? I think we should keep gameplay seperate from the Overview, which lists actual facts that can be sourced.

Appearances: Wouldn't the era template cover it?

Trivia: Fine.

Anyway, that's my feedback. Hope you can get a MOS nailed down. Vehicles and starships may also need MOS treatment too.

In response to the Manual Of Style on your userpage Subtank, I think images should be added outside of the gallery if needed for a particular reason. For example, if there is a hard to describe object or place, or if a scene or a battle needs to be shown to express the summary or description, an appropriate image should be included. But only for the above reasons, not for just showing the thing in different angles and places, the Flood page being a prime example.

As an extra note, I can't agree with the gallery section. Images spread throughout an article can liven it up IMO. I get where you're coming from on the nature of images in articles, how the nature of the game allows a wide variety to be taken. However, at least the UNSCMC article has the virtue of its images corresponding to the events described. An approach to this problem I found solved itself is the nature of image sourcing, ensuring that any images are posted. Suffice to say, by way of the data entered when uploading the image, the source has to be given in most cases. Suffice to say, this lends towards official artwork and screenshots, using uploaded ones as a last resort. That way, pertinant images are included in the article that aren't from an uploader's subjective POV. Going back to the UNSCMC article for instance, the old H3 concept art used to be up there before taken down. Theoretically this should take precedence over screenshots, given that it came directly from Bungie.

Indeed. I have observed multiple sites that talk about "Scarobs" and "Spartan Lazrs".

For levels in campaign you should still keep the walkthrough info it really helps people. The weapon layouts of multiplayer maps could be very brief but is not needed.

I think the proposal is to move the Walkthroughs instead of removing them... Under the proposed system, for example, Cortana (Level)'s walkthrough would be located at Cortana (Level)/Walkthrough.

Greetings, all,

If I might go on a slight tangent. Including pertinent, official, images in the body is a good idea as suggested by Hawki. This touches on another problem on the wiki, which is the atrocious state of image management: massive redundancies, non-descriptive file names (numeric gibberish or starting with numeric gibberish), unspecific categorization, etc..

To improve articles even further there must be a parallel effort to rectify the state of affairs on the image front. Alas, this is even harder since user privileges needed to really drive this (delete/rename images) are only available to admins.

However, regular users can still point our duplicate images for deletion, reupload image under saner names, change intrawiki image links, etc.. There is certainly enough manpower to do this on the wiki assuming some sort of effort could be organized.

Once corrected this would allow articles to link to directly related articles. Looking for images of the MA5-series weapon? There would be a category specifically for those. And of course, it would become much easier to audit what images are actually available.

Thank you.

On the TF2 Wiki, explaining Water to some degree is understandable. There is water, you can drown in it, and there are some strategies with it. But explaining an item and a substance that means absolutely nothing to anything even related to the game? DEAR GOD I LOVE YOU HALOPEDIA. YOU MAKE THE MOST STUPID, POINTLESS ARTICLES EVER AND WON'T FIX THEM AND DON'T AFRAID OF ANYTHING WE'RE BFFS <3

Our articles pertaining to the soundtracks of Halo should also go through standardization. As a musician, I've added relevant content (such as appearances of the song, mood, instrumentation used... etc.) to numerous music articles. The only problem is that every single article is written differently! It makes editing and reading frustrating! I'd be very willing to help look over and decide what these articles need.

Agreed: the variation in the song articles is enormous! For starters, we don't always divide up the "suite" tracks from the Halo 2 & 3 soundtracks, which can cause confusion, and then most are merely two sentences long and only state where it plays and how long it is

I was just about to suggest something like that. All of the articles on Halo's OSTs could be many times more jucier, we just need to find some real musicians, like people who aren't me.

Actually I'm excited about this change... Is it possible that we can start editing to this standard? or do we have to wait for the green light?

Nice job Subtank. I'm with Sub-71, do we have to wait for it to be official or can we start it now ?

Sounds good to me, I've been saying this for awhile, although could we also move the transcript to another page as well? It makes level pages look rather messy.

One more thing I was thinking of when I was fixing links that point to disambiguation pages, could we put something in the new MoS about all the linking? Wikipedia has a bit about link density that I think we should follow. Wikipedia: Linking
