Cortana and the Index

7

How is Cortana able to keep the Index? The Index is a physical object, yet Cortana is essentially a computer program, a virtual, non-physical "object," but she is able to produce a functioning verion of it at will, just as if she was carrying it in her pocket.

I think she just has all of the data off of the index, not the T-stick thing itself.

Halo 3 shows her holding what appears to a very close visual approximation of it, not just a bunch of 1s an 0s or a nice little packet of Data. Besides, even though Cortan is a gifted Hacker, Forerunner progamming languages and software may be difficult for her to process and store due to their arcane nature.

maybe, I don't know. But how does a hologram hold an object?

Spark did it. Maybe she just used the same trick. But also she never actually used a physical object. She just jacked into the Halo and and activated it.

Keep in mind Spark is Foreruuner, and so is more familiar with their sytems than Cortana is. What he can do Cortana may not nessecarily be able to. Besides he may carry a facsimile of most of the important technology on his Halo i.e. an Index on his person (if you can call it that).

the index just wasnt a solid object. it was a key made up of millions of lines of code and cortona probly copyed and saved the codeing to study and learn more about the forunners

If the Index isn't solid, how does Meranda Keys hold it near the end of Halo 2? I think it is a large memory stick, that holds all of the index data on it. Cortana just copied the data and created a holographic imiage of it so she could hold it.

You all should remember this...

In the beginning of the Two Betrayals(Level), the Index was a solid object no doubt about it. When it was inserted into Halo's Control Panel, the data was transmitted into the panel. Because of this, Cortana manage to "Cut & Paste" the entire data and preserve it within her memory banks for future use.

In Halo 2, it is similar but there wasn't any AI in the Control Panel in Delta Halo. So, the data was only transmitted in the panel but is still capable of returning to its frame whenever a person pulls it out...

The Index is, I would assume, a holographic representation of data. A person, such as the Master Chief, can physically manipulate it but ultimately its merely a symbol of the data contained within it, explaining how 343 Guilty Spark and Cortana can carry it.

You can't hold a hologram, since they are created by using intersecting beams of light, and nobody can hold light, not even Chief.

Read the article here. It says that the Index is made of an advanced material that can be converted to information. At least it said that last i checked.

FightWithHonor light can become solid, look at the lightbridges in halo1
FightWithHonorLieutenant

That would appear to be something different, like a form of energy or an anitgravity field. The light may be there simply so that people know where the bridge is, and Chief is actually walking on something else i.e. an antigravity field.

Drawing acomparison between creating a bridge of light and an index is a bit inapt. One is very obviously light, it is glowing etc., while the other appears to be a very realistic solid object.Yes making an object made out of light could possibly be done, but it seems very unlikely, even if the Forerunner have successful.

If your theory is correct than...

Lightbridge=obvious light, does not imitate a real/nonlight object Index=?, imitates a nonlight object

Think of the Index as a USB Jump Drive. It is essentially a physical representation of virtual data. When placed into the Core, Cortana simply went into the Index and took all the data, and showed 343 Guilty Spark a holographic representation to show him what exactly she was doing. The physical representation of the Index is basically an empty drive.

Magic, obviously.

In all seriousness she probably just copied the code, and created a hologram...
