About the Author

Hi, I'm Ryan, but I prefer to be called by my username, Dragonclaws. As the name may suggest, I'm somewhat of a fantasy geek. Although, right now I'd call myself a Halo geek. I am one the admins and I was one of the original users of Halopedia.

I'm a weirdo and I take pleasure in the fact. I have a love of color, probably caused by my weak eyesight. The beauty of the world around me when I first got glasses was... staggering. You might notice many of my descriptions of things begin with color. I dream of ships as vibrant as sunset and people who change color expressively. Color... me like.

I frequently daydream of fantastic worlds. I tend to spend more time in my imagination than in real life, like Pan's Labyrinth without the freaky stuff. So, you know, nothing like Pan's Labyrinth. Maybe Bridge to Terabithia is a better example.

I am very often (like, every day) taken for a girl. This is likely due to my out-of-shape body's fat obscuring the edges of my face, as well as my use of jewelry (rings, necklace, bracelets) and long hair and fingernails. I also have very light, fine body hair and my voice never deepened that much, though I still can't replicate the Velociraptor screech like I used to. I don't really mind, though. Most guys would, but it occurs to me that they must not have a very high opinion of girls in general then.

I have been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (high-functioning autism), a potential explanation for some of my weirdness.

An Overzealous Search for the Number Seven

7

Seven. It’s the lucky number. It’s a holy number. It’s the number you need to win several gambling games. It’s also Bungie’s favorite number, and the source of much annoyance in the Halo community when it comes to Halopedia’s list of references to the number.

"Some of you may be wondering - "What's up with this unhealthy obsession with the number 7?" This page offers some insights."
Luke Smith, linking to Halopedia

The number seven appears in the Halo series quite often. It is Bungie’s calling card, like how Weird Al uses the number 27 in a ton of songs, or how Arnold always says “I’ll be back.” People expect it and they actively seek out any references to the number seven. However, this search can be quite overzealous.

In their efforts to find anything that could be a seven reference, people often hit upon random connections that Bungie did not intend. The human brain is built to recognize patterns, and this can make it hard at times to determine whether there really is a pattern or if we’re just examining random data.

I decided to try and figure out how common seven references really are. I read through the book Halo: Ghosts of Onyx and made a note of each number and whether or not it related to seven. My data and results are accessible here. The short version is below:

There are a total of 921 unique numbers referred to in Ghosts of Onyx. 15 of them are unrelated scientific facts that should not be considered as part of the result. Discounting the 15 unrelated, there are then 906 total numbers. Out of these, there are 772 negative hits, which have no reference to the number seven. That makes 134 potential references.

The potential references are made up of four different categories: explicit (containing the number 7 itself), exponents, other multiples of 7, and multi-step addition (numbers that are broken down into digits and added up). There are 95 explicit hits, 2 exponents, 5 other multiples, and 32 multi-step numbers. I personally find everything but the explicit instances and the exponents to be tenuous at best, which would leave a total of 97 potential references out of 906 (or 921) total numbers.

As you can see, there are far more negative hits than there are even potential hits. Many of the potential references are sketchy, leaving only a few certain references, K7-49, for instance. That’s the explicit number and an exponent in one. Others, like the drug 88947-OP24, are probably just total coincidences. While shows like Lost may make every effort to fit each number into their mythology, this doesn’t seem to be the case with Bungie even with their love of 7. Maybe Ghosts of Onyx is just a bad choice for representing seven references, but given that it’s a pretty hefty Halo book, I believe it’s wise to consider that there aren’t as many seven references as people often think.

This is a great blog. It annoys me how some people manage to find a reference out of anything, when it's so far-fetched.

As per Avatar. I love the number seven as much as any other Halo fan, though looking at the 7 page...it's just quite disturbing.

Great blog Dragonclaws.

Similar to above comments: The "7" article is disturbing and also one of the messiest articles we have in Halopedia (Messiest is Iris to those who plans on cleaning it up).

Also similar to above comments: I completely agree about these "overzealous" seven references. I mean, the most irrelevant stuff comes up sometimes, like: "there are 7 letters in the word Phantom and Cortana". And, "Rooster Teeth gave this achievement a 77% difficulty rating - this is an obvious seven reference". It gets realy stupid. And speaking of "overzealous", you actually looked through all 383 pages of Ghosts of Onyx for seven references? Kind of over the top.

When Dragonclaws is making an argument, he does the research to find evidence to back him up.

All the same, I completely agree with you. I make it a point to avoid that article all together because of how infuriating it appears to me. Random numbers and references are flukes rather than intentions.

As stated by Dragonblaze-052, it is pretty easy to link numbers together to get something else. And with everyone trying to get credit for discovering some hidden message, they'll go to those lengths to prove. Same goes with seeing things in textures and such.

As for Iris... well... that article frightens me, too...

I believe the correct term for most of the supposed seven references is pareidolia. When people make ways for something to eb a seven reference, it stops being legitimate and becomes total coincidence. "JOHN is a four letter word, three numbers in 117, 4 + 3 = 7". That kind of thing. I would vote for completely removing almost all of the more extrapolated 7 references, and just keep the overt ones, where seven is specifically mentioned.

In that case, I would feel that because Bungie went out of their way to actually number them, it 'may' be a 7 reference. That being said, two numbers and/or one operation would be the extent. If it was a string of numbers or something that could get to seven past two operations, I would immediately discredit it. But even what I am listing is pushing it.

I am more inclined to agree with Specops306's idea, where the specifically stated references are listed. That is, unless otherwise stated.

And really, simply because it has 7 in it doesn't mean there is a reference. There are 10 digits you can use (0-9), and there are times where you just need to use the number 7.

The reason for the constant 7 references could merly mean Bungie (or at least the higher-up Bungie staff) believe that 7 truly is a lucky number, thus strive to put as many references in the novels/games in hopes that the "luck" will keep their franchise from becoming stale. This theory I guarantee is unlikely and is most likely an overstatement. On another note, I assume that around 70-85% of the 7 references are mere accidents and once discoverd Bungie refuses to comment in an attempt to make us assume that they put it there purposley, its simple human psychological mind games.

the '7' article reminds me of the southpark when cartmen blames kyle for 911 by using seemingly random numbers. It has stuff that has nothing to do with 7. 15-1=14/2=7! Of course. Kill the article.
