Greetings Halo Nation community,

Today I write this blog for community input of a plan which was drafted and discussed within the administration. Firstly, I'll go down with brief historic details of Halo Nation and it's current status today.

==Brief History==
As some of you (namely older users here) will probably know, Halo Nation was created in Fall 2010. [http://www.halopedian.com/Main_Page Halopedia], now located at halopedian.com, used to exist in it's spot. However, Halopedia's community (many of which are still also members here) had a majority decision vote to move off wikia's domain, halo.wikia.com which Halo Nation currently uses. The reasons for the move aren't relevant to this proposal so I won't mention them here (but you can read more about that on the past discussion archives if you search for it).

Anyway, the result of the community vote back then was essentially a copy - paste of Halopedia on wikia to it's independent host, because Wikia did not shut down the wikia site here, thus leaving two Halopedias existing. To solve this, the wiki here was re-branded as Halo Nation and thus took it's current form from then on, run by a small number of users who had decided to stay after the move. Unfortunately, following the launch of Halo Nation, some hostilities and disagreements occurred between users of the two sites, and communication and cooperation between them broke down significantly, thus leaving two wikis with two communities split between each other, leaving Halo Nation significantly short of traffic that it could potentially have. This is a long-ongoing issue which most of the administration has long sought to solve and bring up some proposals to promote cooperation with not just Halopedia but with Halo-related sites in general and give this wiki a boost in traffic and edits.

==So what is this proposal we're talking about?==
Since Halo Nation was re-branded, the idea behind it was to transition it to lean more towards the aim of being a social, community-orientated wiki while Halopedia continued to focus on it's encyclopediatic role that it has long been recognized for. This idea however, was never carried out due to internal disagreements, which is why Halo Nation still remains as another Halo encyclopedia. However, now that those disagreements have been mostly settled, the final discussed version of this proposal will be put forth for community voting and discussion below.

Since Halo Nation has/utilizes features which Halopedia and other Halo sites lack (eg. blog posts, twitter updates, polls, etc), transforming it into a community-orientated wiki by adding a social scope to it would be ideal, right? The proposal also includes some changes to other side-features of the wiki will also take place, which are aimed at community-mixing; that is, encouraging the local community here to mix and cooperate with communities of other sites, such as Halopedia, HBO, etc. The copyright policy and chat feature are namely in this. More details will follow on that in a bit.

===The proposal in detail===
So, getting to the point. The proposal that has been put up here entails the following changes:

*Addition of the social-orientated content; this hasn't been fully decided upon, but several ideas include the introduction of official pages for game matches, a broader and more relaxed policy for blog posts, discussion threads based on upcoming games, products and whatnot, etc. Additional suggestions include having the articles written more from a gamer's perspective rather than an encyclopedia's, and making Halo Nation focus more on the gaming aspect of Halo rather than official canon. Ideas from you all are welcome and will be taken into account.

*Enforcement of the [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ CC-BY-SA] copyright license and it's integration into the copyright policy. A while back, several articles were copied from Halopedia to Halo Nation without the required attribution. This is unethical, and the nature of "copy and don't give credit" editing goes against what truly contributing to the site stands for, regardless of the sites involved as this can happen with any website. Enforcing this license will give any and all users the right to remove or alter content or otherwise add attribution to a website from which information was noticeably copied from. The definition here of "copying" and breaking the CC-BY-SA license is copying content from another site without re-writing it using different words, etc. Even if the copyright issue here isn't so much of an issue as it used to be, enforcing this policy will still encourage users to make proper contributions and cooperating with other sources from which they use any information from (eg. Halopedia, HBO, etc etc).

*Currently, one of the issues which has left the wiki in an undesirable mess is the massive amount of [http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Category%3AStubs Stubs] it still has. Although each will be looked at individually, most are the same case; articles that are something like 2 paragraphs. Since the proposal aims to transform Halo Nation into a social-oriented wiki, it follows the principle of "Less articles, more lists". This means that a number of small articles will be gathered together and merged into a larger list which would not only look better, but would also be easier to police and maintain.

As an example, let's look at Jiralhanae characters - [[Strab]], for
instance. The article on him is 1,030 bytes long. Take out
the information-duplicating infobox; the character navbar; the
"references" and "appearances" sections and you have this:

That's all there is. He's a minor character mentioned once as being
part of a larger group and is never mentioned again. The conclusion is that, if we're to tidy up the mess of stub articles on the wiki and carry out it's transition into a community-orientated wiki, articles like this should be merged into a larger list; in this case, [[List of Jiralhanae characters]], because they're simply too small and focus on something that will never be looked at again. Of course, if you get 1kb of written content, it would make sense to give it its own page, but not when it's two lines of information and a ton of templates to make it look longer.

Of course, larger articles will remain as they are. Several obvious examples include but not limited to [[Halo 4]], [[Master Chief Petty Officer]], etc.

*Overhaul of the Chat feature; again, as a way to encourage community-mixing, it has been suggested that the Chat feature be turned off, and replace it with an IRC channel on the [http://freenode.net/index.shtml Freenode network]. One of the reasons for this is because several other wikis operate their own channels on this network instead of using the Chat feature. Also, unlike the chat feature, Freenode allows users to be on more than one channel at the same time. This means that users here will be able to join other channels on the network, as well as others joining the Halo Nation channel. The result would be the greater interactions of users here with users from other wikis in the proper chat environment, with which community-cooperation can be made. The Chat feature has also been notable for it's issues of speed and policing; whereas a channel on an IRC network has many more features than Chat which make it easier to manage and interact on. IRC also has it's own network staff which are capable to intervene on-request in the event that local ops or admins aren't present, which is an issue I've personally observed a number of times on Chat. IRC is also completely separate from the wiki, which solves access issues which link the chat and the wiki and enforces the policy of [http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Halo_Nation:Chat_Policy#Wiki_does_not_equal_Chat Wiki =/= Chat].

An IRC channel has already been set up on Freenode for users to check out. To join it, go [http://webchat.freenode.net/ here] and put in any username you like in the Username field, and '''#Halo-Nation''' in the channel field. Do note that the channel will likely be empty and quiet for the moment however, since it's not currently official, so don't let that put you off.
*Promotion of cooperation and friendly relations with other Halo-related sites, namely Halopedia. This of course has been repeated above a number of times, but will be re-stated in a more understandable way. In the case of Halopedia, as stated above, the move of Halopedia from wikia has left two sites focusing on the same aspect of the same topic, which in turn has created a split between the two sites in regards to their communities and traffic. If this split was broken, both sites would receive twice as much traffic and editing as they currently do now. By having Halo Nation restructure itself more of a social site for Halo fans, this means that users from Halopedia will be able to use Halo Nation for the social halo-related aspects. In the meantime, as Halopedia continues to focus as a canon encyclopedia, Halo Nation can use content from there as a resource for it's video-game orientated articles. This is basically creating a system of "trade" between the two sites and communities and merging the communities into one, that use both sites. Already there are a few role model users of this aspect (ie. that use both sites). Imagine the benefits received if this was the case community-wide. In addition, neither Halopedia nor Halo Nation currently have any official links to each other on their official community links page. If this proposal is accepted, the addition of links and close cooperation between the two sites will be part of this proposal. They're two sites on the same topic; so let's encourage cooperation, not partition. This applies not only to Halo Nation's relations with Halopedia, but with all other Halo sites as well. Cooperation, as I see it here, is something which is greatly lacking right now.

I realize that many of you will see this as a huge daunting task. It's no lie that it is a rather major proposal, but if approved, it will taken onboard in the most professional way possible. I myself, along with a few other veteran editors will gladly carry out the work required by this proposal if the community accepts it and everyone here will be invited to participate (teamwork always prevails, right? ;-)). 	Im from the Philippines and like you I have Halo games I have Halo PC (Not custom ed) H2 vista but not activated cant find good product key. Playing ODST on Xboxs in game dimension whenever I have freetime cause I dont have an Xbox.....yet. Im a wide gamer but still dont play a few games. In Halo im an Ultra Elite who can kick ass with any weapon. In real life im a heavy when it comes to guns im A BIT overweight but just by 7 pounds. Also if you know a working product key please tell me right away I already finished my Halo PC on legendary and im bored! and there is too much traffic on the way to game dimension and im bored of my things. 	The Brutes, brutal, reckless, powerful. They will kill sometime, they're no pushovers, maybe Halo 2, maybe Reach, but in Halo 3, they mean buissness. 		+	Another race is the Kig-Yar (we'll cover jackals at the moment) with their gauntlets they usually take a good two shots to kill, which will toll down on ammo, they don't die easy and will really kill you fast in groups, their snipers will kill you from the distance, beam rifles are very deadly, focus rifles as well, other less strong weapons will kill not as well but are still a nusance, and with other ground units will weaken your sheilds and make it easier for the ground units to finsh off.
